I like the shadows and lighting in YafRay much better.....but Povray is much quicker.
I have been trying out different settings with the Povray lights but cannot seem to get the results I get from Yafray.
When I try to get the caustics effects in YafRay that I can get with PovRay...no such luck.
Hmmmmm. I know there are alot of YafRay supporters on these forums....any other supporters of PovRay ????
some more $ 0.02 from me today ;)
... because i know much more about that, than about blender ;)
sry, but its the first time i cant share the opinion of ztonzy ;)
the galleries dont just depend on the features of the tool. they depend imo primarely from the users and the period, in wich a tool was used. yafpics are growing better all the time - i dont think they have reached pov level up to now.
i cant agree with qwert neither.
in my tests yaf was much faster. i did a cornell box with glass and metal. i rendered in pov using radiosity and in yaf i did photonmapping. i dont think, that using yaf under debian and pov under win did make the difference of some minutes to moer than a quarter of an hour.
i dont know yet, if it is the same with biger scenes. qwert, pls post more about your experience ;)
i am doing some comparisons on the two raytracers and maybe i am going to publish them some day.
i would use yafray as renderer because of:
it was much faster in my gi test up to now
i did not have much trouble with the code up to now (and i had really anoing problems using pov, like my way of defining things just did not work in one case ...)
the code of yaf is more proper i think.
afaik they tell all the time they are going to redo all the code, but they just add features (i think of the new readiosity algorythm). i was quite confused ;)
i found it easier, to the cornell box in yaf - even while i use pov much longer (started at school with it ;))
hdri support in basic version
more and fast developpement
its true opensource (dont know if you care ;))
as a "stand alone raytracer" pov has better cards i think. there are some really nice features for generating pics based on a scene description, like loops.
All very informative. Thanks. I think I will have to give them both a try and see which one better suits my particular needs. By the way,...I ran a script in pov, and I was unable to find the directory that it was rendering to....any advice on where to look?
i explained my point of view in this thread, i hope it can help :

we should really need and appreciate a comparison between POVRAY and YAFRAY, with images, speed counts, spec lists, etc..
