Does anybody know, how to freely deform selection in GIMP?

There are several ways. Under the select menu (after right clicking on the picture) selection to path is one method. You can select an area and push the button to the bottom left area that looks like a red square and use the Iwarp to deform it (or apply any other affects), and then change it back to selection.If you need a precise area selected, you can choose the area point by point with the tool that looks like a pen with a line being drawn.

I learned how to use the Gimp from a book called Grokking the Gimp.

Anyway, you have some ways with the Transform tool in the Tool Box.
Or, obviously many ways with Filters > Distorts
Try the Curve Bend one
